VW Beetle Suspension FAQ
VW Beetle Suspension Components - Frequently Asked Questions
Will this fit my Beetle? (Super Beetle vs. Standard Beetle)
VW Beetle suspension components vary by year and model. Super Beetles (1971-1979) use MacPherson strut front suspension, while Standard Beetles use torsion bar/link pin or ball joint front ends. Always verify your Beetle year and front end type before ordering. We do not offer any front suspension parts for Super Beetles. Contact us if you're unsure about fitment. We do offer Dropped Adjustable IRS spring plates that will fit Super Beetles.
What's the difference between link pin and ball joint front ends?
Link pin front ends were used on Beetles through 1965 and use a kingpin design. Ball joint front ends (1966+) use modern ball joints and are generally considered superior for handling and parts availability. Suspension components are NOT interchangeable between the two designs.
What's the difference between swing axle and IRS (Independent Rear Suspension)?
Swing axle is the original VW rear suspension design used on most Beetles through 1968. It uses a single pivot point at the transmission, causing the rear wheels to change camber during suspension travel. This can lead to "axle jacking" or tucking under during hard cornering. It also makes the tires tilt in at the top when severely lowered.
IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) was introduced in 1969 and uses CV joints and trailing arms, allowing each rear wheel to move in a much smaller front to back arc, causing much less camber when lowered. IRS provides better handling, more predictable cornering, improved traction, and safer performance when lowered. Many enthusiasts upgrade pre-'69 Beetles to IRS or aftermarket independent rear suspension systems for improved handling and safety.
Why can't I eliminate negative camber on my lowered swing axle Beetle?
It's a common misconception that you can fully eliminate negative camber on a lowered swing axle Beetle - the reality is that it's impossible due to the swing axle's fundamental design. The swing axle pivots at a single point on the transmission, creating an arc as the suspension travels. When you lower a Beetle, you're moving the suspension down in its travel arc, which inherently increases negative camber (wheels tilting inward at the top). The lower you go, the more extreme the camber becomes. This isn't a problem you can "fix" with adjustments or different parts - it's basic geometry. The only real solutions are: 1) Don't lower as much (keep it mild at 2-3 inches max), 2) Do an extensive trans axle raise with lots of fab work, 3) Convert to IRS or an aftermarket independent rear suspension system, or 4) Accept the camber as part of the lowered swing axle look. Attempting to eliminate it with spacers or modifications can compromise safety and handling.
Do I need special tools to install suspension components?
Basic suspension installation requires standard hand tools, a floor jack, and jack stands. Most all of our parts are Bolt-On, and require no cutting or drilling. We recommend professional installation if you're not experienced with VW suspension work.
How much will this lower my Beetle?
Lowering amounts vary by component. Adjustable front beams typically offer 2-6 inches of adjustment, drop spindles lower 2-2.5 inches, and Dropped Adjustable rear spring plates provide 1-4 inches. Drop spindles should ALWAYS be the first addition when lowering any car. Check individual product specifications for exact measurements. Remember that extreme lowering can affect ride quality and ground clearance.
Can I mix and match suspension components from different manufacturers?
While some components are compatible across brands, we recommend using complete matched sets when possible for optimal performance and safety. Mixing components can lead to fitment issues. If you're building a custom setup, contact us for compatibility guidance.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship VW suspension components worldwide. International shipping costs and delivery times vary by location. All international orders are calculated at checkout with duties and taxes estimated where applicable.
